Thalia Theater, Hamburg


Established in 1843, Thalia Theater in Hamburg is one of the biggest theaters in the city. It was set up by Charles Maurice Schwartzenberger. The name of the Theater is derived from Thalia, who is the muse of idyllic poetry and comedy. The Thalia Theater is owned by the state and runs on state funds.

The Thalia Theater is located in Raboisen 67, 20095 Hamburg, Germany. The main theater is located in close proximity to Alster. Two small theater halls have also been acquired by Thalia Theater at Gaubstrabe. The number of seats in the original Thalia Theater was 1000, while the seating capacities of the two smaller halls are 170 and 90 separately.

Thalia Theater is well-known for the wide range of performances staged by many famous artists and directors. Ulrich Khuon was selected as the director of Thalia Theater in 2000. The plays written by dramatists like Fritz Kater, Moritz Rinke, Dea Loher, and Lukas Buss were staged under the guidance of Ulrich.

Approximately 340 people work at the Thalia Theater. Every year Thalia hosts 9 new plays apart from the older plays. The ensemble of Thalia Theater performs well-known plays written by famous dramatists.

Thalia Theatre also tours to other countries. It has performed before audiences all over Europe. Performances of the plays have also become famous in places like New York, Hong Kong, Seoul, Korea, Bogotá Columbia, and Rio de Janeiro. The contribution of the Thalia Theater towards the development of theatre in Hamburg has been recognized and accordingly it has been honored with the title of the 'Theater of the Year' in 2003 by 'Theater Heute’, a German journal.
