River Alster

Hamburg is located at the converging point of river Alster, Elbe and Bille. River Alster, a tributary of River Elbe, converges into the Elbe through two parallel canals. These canals serve the purpose of seperating the eastern part of Hamburg from that of the western part.

River Alster waters a large part of the Hamburg landscape, flowing through a distance of 56 kilometers. It has its origin 25 kilometers away from the city center in the Henstedt region in Schleswig-Holstein. River Alster is an integral part of Hamburg
geography. It follows a meandering course through the north eastern part of the city and then finally channelize into lakes Außenalster or Outer Alster, Binnenalster or Inner Alster and Kleiner Alster or Small Alster.

The Outer Alster lake covers a massive area of 160 hectares and has a depth of 2.50 meters. The Inner Alster has a total expanse of 18 hectares. These man-made lakes, watered by the river, have some of the important districts in the city developing along their banks. The banks of River Alster are important outing spots for the people of Hamburg.
