Reeperbahn, in the district of St. Pauli, is one of the famous areas of Hamburg. Reeperbahn represents a vibrant cultural and entertainment scene that attracts locals and tourists alike. The street, which is quiet in the day time, comes alive with live music, shows and other forms of entertainment during night.
Reeperbahn in Hamburg stretches along the world famous red light area of St. Pauli from Millerntor in the east to Nobistor in the west. The street is almost 600 meters long. What originally served as the region for making ropes for ships (from where Reeperbahn gets its name) is now a renowned entertainment hub in Hamburg.
The history of Reeperbahn reveals that sailors used to visit the district for drink and entertainment. Old and retired sailors who were restricted from entering the respectable areas of the city also flocked to Reeperbahn. Thus, it turned into a place where commercialized sex was practiced. But today, it is much more than sex and sleaze. The entertainment scenario has become more refined with the emergence of theaters, musicals, live music, cabaret, shows and festivals.
