New Elbe Tunnel is one of the major tunnels of Hamburg. Started in 1968, the construction of this tunnel took 7 years to be completed. The New Elbe Tunnel was opened to the public in 1975. The tunnel comprises of three pipes. This tunnel is 2.6 km long. It holds six Autobahn lanes. Two more lanes were included in 2004 when another pipe was added to the existing three pipes. This pipe was added to meet the requirement of the growing traffic of Hamburg. World's largest tunnel boring machine was used in order to drill this pipe.

New Elbe Tunnel is known as Neuer Elbtunnel in German. Being a part of Autobahn A7, this tunnel forms an important transportation link between the Danish border and the South of Hamburg. New Elbe Tunnel of Hamburg not only serves the purpose of minimizing the pressure of traffic on other tunnels but has become one of the major attractions of Hamburg.
