Kohlbrandbrucke

Kohlbrandbrucke has become one of the major attractions of not only Hamburg but whole Europe. This huge cable stayed bridge was inaugurated by the German President Walter Scheel on 9th September, 1974. This bridge is the most important connector of the port areas between the two branches of Elbe River, the Norderelbe and the Suderelbe.

Kohlbrandbrucke is a 3940 m long bridge. 88 steel cables have been used for building this bridge. The bridge is supported by 75 pylons. Ships can easily pass underneath this 55 m high bridge. The 4% inclined road allows them to pass even in times of high tide.

Kohlbrandbrucke of Hamburg is an evidence of the wonders of modern technology. This bridge was built
in a time span of 4 years. 81,000 cubic meters of concrete and 12,700 tonne of steel were used to construct this bridge, which is regarded as a representative structure of the city of Hamburg. 160 million DM were spent to make this bridge.

Kohlbrandbrucke Bridge has got the capacity of accommodating 30,000 cars which pass over it everyday. It was opened to walkers on the day of its inauguration in 1974. Again it was opened to pedestrians in 2004 on the occasion of its 30th birthday. Other than these two occasions, walking on the bridge is strictly prohibited.

The design of the bridge itself is awesome. Hans Wittfoht and Egon Jux were the two designers of this magnificent bridge. Standing on the bridge can offer you an incredible view of Hamburg city.
