Hamburg Geography


The geographical alignment of Hamburg is an important factor in determining the characteristics of Hamburg Geography. The geographical co-ordinates of Hamburg are 53.33 N Latitude and 09.59 E Longitude. It is therefore that the city enjoys a maritime climatic condition with hot summers and cool winters. Winter in Hamburg extends from December to January, during which the city enjoys a prolonged period of snowfall. The lowest temperature count is in the month of January when the temperature sinks upto 28 o Fahrenheit. The winter is followed by an elongated autumn from May to October.

The landscape of Hamburg is accentuated by lakes, rivers, plain lands, forests and woodlands. Some of the
important rivers draining the city are rivers Elbe, Bille and Alster. These rivers have further branched off into small streams and canals. This is why Hamburg is considered to be one of the most important ports in Europe.

Hamburg was formerly a part of the Holstein region which is situated at the meeting point of rivers Elbe, Alster and Bille. It has a total expanse of 755.16 square kilometers. Apart from being the second largest city in Germany, Hamburg is also an important municipality and one among the sixteen divisions that constitute the Federal Republic of Germany. The time Zone of Hamburg is also a determining factor of Hamburg geography. The city has a time zone of GMT+1 and the daytime saving time is GMT+2.
