The Erotic Art Museum in Hamburg is one of its kind. It displays portraits dating from 1520 till modern times. These portraits pertain to erotic art. There are around 1800 original masterpieces on exhibition at the museum. These artifacts have been put on display and the entire exhibition is tastefully done.
The authorities have put great emphasis on the fact of not offending the sensibilities of any section of its audience. The Bernhard-Nocht-Strasse houses a building which is often used as a venue for exhibiting erotic photography.
The idea for the establishment of such a museum originated with Claus Becker. The Erotic Art Museum at Hamburg was founded on 11th November 1992. The subject of eroticism in art and its presentation has always been a controversial issue. The depiction of eroticism in the graphical arts of painting and sculpture is most overt. But for centuries, erotic art has had to resort to covert ways to escape censorship. Becker, through the setting up of this Museum, attempted to make this unique collection easily accessible to

people. In 1997, the Erotic Art museum had to be shifted from its original premises at the Bernhard-Nocht-Strasse to Nobistor. But on completion of its 10th year, it was brought back to site where it began its journey.
The Museum has played host to several interesting exhibitions. These include:
- Feierabend by Jan Christof disc
- Erotikanatomik-Marc Felten
- Playboy Club Tour 2005
The Playboy Club Tour showcased the works of artists like Mathia Hansen, Wiebke Kramer, Julian Murphy, David Russel, Friedrich “Fiete” Frahm and Alex Varenne. Apart from these exhibitions, the 2000 square meters of the Museum gallery features almost 1000 individual paintings. These works date back to the 6th century.
