Hamburg elections comprise the parliamentarian elections, the election of the Mayor and that of the senate. The members of the Hamburg parliament are elected by general polls. Representing the mass, these 121 representatives are elected by adult franchise. The Hamburg Parliamentarian elections take place after every four years. The members of Parliament have the responsibility of overseeing the state of affairs in the city and cater to the needs and the requirements of the people. Its area of functionality is mainly focused on building projects and matters regarding the fares of public transport.
The Hamburg Parliament has the power to elect the President and the four vice Presidents. The President is the head of the parliament. The parliamentary groups that dominate the governing body include

the CDU or the Christian Democratic Union, the SDP or the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the GAL or the Green Alternative List, alternatively the Green party.
The election of Hamburg First Mayor or the head of the state is an important part of the Hamburg elections. The Mayor is elected by the State parliament or the Burgerschaft. The present mayor of Hamburg is Carl-Friedrich Arp Freiherr von Beust, who belongs to the CDU party and he won with a majority poll of 47.2 percent during the February 2004 elections. The SDU on the other hand were pinned down with 30.5 percent of the total votes.
The Hamburg senates are elected by the collective support the parliamentary groups of the government.
