Hamburg churches stand testimony to the religious practices of the city and they also display the superior craftsmanship and artistry as reflected in the architecture of the church buildings. Apart from being important tourist destinations, they also serve as monuments of the city's historical past and thus are immensely significant in this regard. Most of the churches were built during the medieval times. But some of them suffered destruction owing to incidents like the Great Fire and the numerous wars that were fought in the country. The Second World War wrecked heavy damage to the structures and renovation work had to be undertaken to restore them to their erstwhile condition and glory. The churches in Hamburg were also the storehouse of several antiquities. These display craftsmanship of a very high order.
