Gelsenkirchen Sightseeing: Some of the historical buildings of Gelsenkirchen city that are worth catching a glimpse of are Schloss Berge, Luttinghoff House, and Hans Sachs House. The Schloss Berge was built during the early classical period. The castle has a lake and a park surrounding it. The castle was completely modernized in 1977 and 1978 and today functions as a meeting venue and also has a restaurant in its premises. This is the ideal place to enjoy a walk or to have a picnic in the lush green grounds surrounding the park. At the end of July every year, the annual Schloss Berge summer festival takes place in the castle. The Luttinghof moated castle is the oldest historic monument of the town. The castle is surrounded by gardens and ponds.

FIFA World Cup 2006: Many of the FIFA World Cup 2006 matches will also be held in Gelsenkirchen city. On 9 June 2006, a Group A match between Poland and Ecuador will take place in Gelsenkirchen. On 16 June 2006, a Group C match between Argentina and Serbia & Montenegro will take place in Gelsenkirchen. On 21 June 2006, a Group D match between Portugal and Mexico will take place in Gelsenkirchen. On 12 June 2006, a Group E match between USA and Czechoslovakia will take place here. On 1 July 2006, a quarter-final match between the qualifying teams will take place in Gelsenkirchen. These matches will be played in the ultra-modern FIFA World Cup Stadium of Gelsenkirchen. This stadium was opened officially on 13 August 2001. This stadium was assigned the highest possible five-star category by the governing body. This €191 million stadium was built entirely through private contributions.
