| Dortmund city is located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. To the south of the city, flows the Ruhr River. Another smaller river, Emscher River, flows through the city. The Dortmund Harbor is the largest German canal port. Dortmund city is also known as the "Green Metropolis" of the state. Nearly half of the city is covered with waterways and green parks. Dortmund city is an industrial center of the Ruhr district. The city was destroyed badly during the World War II, but many of the historic buildings were reconstructed later. Dortmund city, which was known as a steel city formerly, is now known as an important location for high-tech industries in Europe.
