Berlin Mayor


The Berlin mayor holds the highest office in the government structure of Berlin. Berlin Mayor is also referred to as the Regierender Bürgermeister (Governing Mayor). He holds office as the Mayor of the city and the head of the Bundesland.

The Senates in Berlin are elected on the instructions of the Berlin Mayor. The Berlin Mayor, along with the Senate, runs the Berlin administration. The mayor and the Senate, both have their official seats in the Berliner Rathaus.

A social democrat and a leading politician in Germany, the present Berlin Mayor is Klaus Wowereit. Born in 1953 in Berlin, the mayor with the encouragement and diligence of his mother, pursued his primary education
in a local grammar school and later got a university education. Klaus Wowereit stepped into the realm of politics by being appointed the councilor in Tempelholf, which was formerly one of the twenty boroughs of West Berlin. Working towards the cultural development of the area, he also concentrated on the political arena of Berlin.

Having won a place in Tempelholf, Mayor Klaus Wowereit won a seat in the Berlin House of Representatives. Serving four successive years in the house, he was elected the chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the year 1999. Working in coalition with the conservative Christian Democrats or the CDU for a considerable period of time, he was elected the mayor of Berlin, long after the CDU fell apart after a financial scandal it was involved in.
