The Humboldt University of Berlin is the first educational institute of Berlin and was established in the year 1810. The founder of this university was Wilhelm von Humboldt who wanted to make this university as the ‘mother of all universities’ in Berlin. Humboldt was deeply influenced by the ideas of philosophers Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Friedrich Schleiermacher.
In the initial years, the Humboldt University in Berlin had four departments, namely philosophy, law, medicine and theology. Thereafter many new departments were opened by the University authorities. Humboldt University can proudly claim that 27 Nobel Prize winners have graduated from this university.

The University had to close down during the Second World War and was reopened again in 1946. At present, the Humboldt University of Berlin has departments on all the major subjects like social sciences, human medicine, cultural science, arts and humanities, mathematics, natural sciences and agricultural science.About 207 different programs are taught at the University. Diploma degree can be obtained in 19 subjects whereas the master degree can be obtained in 59 subjects. Research provision in different fields is also offered at the university.
The Humboldt University of Berlin has many international students and knowledge transfer programs as well. The student services include library, hostel accommodation, cafeterias, parking space, computer training centers and language centre.
