There are more than 150 companies in Berlin that are engaged in the manufacturing of medical equipments such as laser machines, biomedicines, x-ray machines, CT scanners and so on. The local government of Berlin is very concerned about the maintenance of hospitals in the city. In 2003 a healthcare association was set up in Berlin under the initiation of Senator Ulf Fink and some of the senior medical practitioners in the Berlin health circuit. This association is called Health-City Berlin and the objective of this body is to turn Berlin into a health destination where people can come and receive good healthcare at reasonable costs. The importance of healthcare in the agenda of Berlin’s government can be gauged from the fact that the city spends 16% of its GDP on hospitals and health units.
