Conducive to the inter-cultural exchange between Germany and USA, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, designed by Hugh Stubbins, was a contribution by the United States to Germany during the INTERBAU exhibition of 1957. This event saw the gathering of twenty two nations contributing in their own ways to the reconstruction and the renovation of the Hansa Quarter in Germany that was completely destroyed during the Second World War.
As per the designs of Hugh Stubbins, the curved roof of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt or the The House of World Cultures, symbolized the freedom of art and literature in Germany after the strict regime of

Hitler. The local people of Berlin, however, interpret the curved roof as a pregnant oyster and have named it ‘Schwangere Auster’. The Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin hosted some of the important inter-continental congressional meetings and cultural seminars. One of the most important cultural centers in Germany, it also acts as venue to host to dance and musical programs. It is also the most sought after venue for different art exhibitions, specializing in non-European avant-garde art form.
Tourists can check out the stores and shops at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. These stores sell books, music, VCDs and DVDs related to world culture and tradition.
