The Berlin Film Festival or Berlin International Film Festival which is popularly known as Berlinale is the most prestigious annual event of the European film industry. The Berlin Film Festival is as popular and prestigious as the Cannes Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.

The history of the Berlin Film Festival dates back to the year 1951 when the American settlers who occupied major parts of Berlin started this festival. Berlin Film Festival was started with the motto of bringing back the cultural heritage of the city. The first movie which was showcased at the Berlin Film Festival was Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Rebecca’. At present the Berlin Film Festival has become the national festival
of Berlin and has become a major crowd-puller. The event is held in the month of February and spans for two weeks

The most prestigious award at the Berlin Film Festival is the ‘Golden Bear Award’ which is awarded for best motion picture and for lifetime achievement in the field of cinema. ‘Silver Bear’ is another award at this festival which is awarded to best music composer, best actor, best actress, best director and best short film. There are other awards as well which are awarded at the Berlin Film Festival. The films of the festival are shown at many exclusive cinema halls of the city.

The Berlin Film Festival has become a part of the heritage and prestige of Berlin culture.
