The largest palace in Berlin, the Charlottenburg Palace was built on the lines of baroque style. Constructed in several stages, the first part that was built was the central part, which was erected between the years 1695 and 1699.
Until its expansion after the coronation of Frederick as the first Prussian king of Germany, the Charlottenburg Palace served to be the summer retreat of Sophie Charlotte who was the wife of Elector Frederick III. The copula and the orangery wing were added to the construction during this period. Further between the year 1740 and 1746, the east wing of the Palace was constructed.
Even after the destruction caused during the Allied bombings in 1943, some of the sections in the Charlottenburg Palace were left intact in their original glory. These sections in the Palace have turned out to be some of the best tourist attractions in Berlin.
