The Berlin Carnival of Cultures is a unique four-day long festival which is organized on the streets of Berlin to celebrate the cultural ethnicity of Berlin. Berlin is a place which has a large amalgamation of international populace and hence the city is well-known for its multi-cultural background. The sixth largest open-air festival of Germany, Berlin Carnival of Cultures has become an important event that is celebrated every year in the month of May for a period of four days.
The history of the Berlin Carnival of Cultures dates back to the late 1980’s when Richard von Weizsäcker, ex-mayor of Berlin and ex-Commissioner for Foreigners’ Affairs, Barbara John felt the need to showcase the different cultural events of Berlin under one roof.

As a result of their initiative, the Werkstatt der Kulturen committee was formed in the year 1993.
Werkstatt der Kulturen committee was the main organizer of the first Berlin Carnival of Cultures which was held in the year 1996. About 50,000 spectators had come to this parade which comprised of 2,200 performers and about 50 colorful floats. In the year 1997 the first Children’s Carnival was organized and since then it has become an important part of Carnival of Cultures.
The Berlin Carnival of Cultures has become an international platform for cultural expression. In the past few years there has been a tremendous increase in the number of participants as well as spectators. Special prizes and awards are also distributed to the best carnival groups and youth groups.
