Berliner Dom Berlin

The Berliner Dom is situated in the Meusem Island region, beside the Spree River. Built between 1894 and 1905, the Berliner Dom is a cathedral that was constructed on the lines of Baroque architecture. It is 114 meters in height and 73 meters wide and is considered to be one of the most important tourist attractions in Berlin.

Designed by Johann Boumann, the Berliner Dom is considered to have replaced an old 15th century church which was built on the same place. This church was also the court church of the Hohenzollern royal family. The cathedral was later reconstructed between 1816 and 1822. Finally, in the year 1894, on the instructions of Emperor Willem II, the cathedral was destroyed and the  Berliner Dom was built to replace it. The new building was designed by Julius Raschdorff who
was greatly influenced by Baroque architecture. Some of the things to see in Berliner Dom include:
  • The neo-baroque pulpit and the stained glasses, which were designed by Anton von Werner
  • The Sauer's Organ
  • The 1530 Elector's tomb
  • The main altar of the Church
Much of the Berliner Dom was destroyed in the bombings of the World War II, but the interiors of the cathedral were saved from being ruined by constructing a temporary roof. The restoration of the Berliner Dom began in the year 1975. The artifacts in the interiors of the cathedral were reinstated to their former position during the renovation of the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
