A 19th century construction, Alexanderplatz was also known as the 'ox market' or the Berlin Ochsenmarkt, but later came to be referred to as 'Alex' after Tzar Alexander I visited the place. Once, a busy square in the city of Berlin, Alexanderplatz is presently the technological hub of the city.
One of the largest man-made structures in Berlin, the Fernsehturm, is situated in Alexanderplatz. It is a television tower with a height of 365 meters. The Fernsehturm in Alexanderplatz was a result of a joint venture between German and Swedish architects. It comprises of a sphere made entirely of steel, a concrete shaft and a TV antenna. The Fernsehturm has a revolving restaurant in the dome of the tower. This restaurant attracts lot of tourists who come here to enjoy the view from the tower top while indulging

in the local delicacies. There is also a seperate view platform in the tower situated at a height of 203 meters.

A major part of the Alexanderplatz was destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War, but was restored later. Located in the middle of the West and the East Berlin, the Alexanderplatz is built on the lines of socialist architecture, characterized by over-sized buildings. Presently, plans are being made to renovate the buildings situated in the Alexanderplatz to add more beauty to the landscape.
