Legal Formalities of Paris Wedding

To get married in Paris, interested couples need to carry out certain legal formalities. Couples who are interested to celebrate their wedding ceremony in Paris can choose from three following options:
  • Religious Ceremony: A legally married couple who have completed the formalities of Civil Ceremony can only perform the religious ceremony. During this ceremony the couple has to present a copy of the Certificate of Civil Marriage to the minister.
  • Civil Ceremony: A legal Civil Wedding Ceremony is organized at the City Hall in Paris, which is commonly known as the “Mairie”.

  • Exchange of Vows: This ceremony is not legally recognized in France but because of its religious association, it is known to symbolize the deep love between the couple.
Some of the documents that couples need to submit if they are willing to marry in Paris are:
  • An affidavits / statutory declaration confirming single status also know as a Certificate of Celibacy.
  • A widow or widower needs to have a death certificate.
  • A passport valid for minimum10 years.
  • Certificate of Law (Custom)
  • In case of name change, the person concern must produce the change of Name Deed in order to get married.
  • Birth certificate of the bride and the groom is required.
  • If any one of the couple is under 18, they need to have a written approval from their parents or guardians.
  • One of the couples must be a resident of France for over 40 days before the wedding ceremony.
  • If applicable, the Decree Absolute (the final divorce paper) has to be attached.
