UNESCO building in Paris is not only the headquarters of UNESCO, but is also famed as a top tourist attraction. It embodies modern Paris architecture. France joined UNESCO on 4th November, 1946. The classy architectural marvel is located just behind the Military Academy.
Three eminent architects, belonging to different nationalities planned and designed this building. Thus, Paris UNESCO Building is considered to be an international building. Marcel Breuer of United States of America, Pier Luigi Nervi of Italy and Bernard Zehrfuss of France were the master mind behind creating this architectural marvel. These architects in turn were chosen by a panel of five including Lucio Costa of Brazil, Walter Gropius of USA, Charles Le Corbusier of France, Sven Markelius of Sweden and Ernesto Rogers of Italy.

Main UNESCO Building
The UNESCO main building was constructed in the shape of the English alphabet 'Y' or more particularly it resembles a three pointed star. The Secretariat is housed in the main building and the building itself is situated in Place de Fontenoy. Covering a total surface area of 3,270 square meters, the UNESCO building stands to a height of 28.75 meters. The rich decoration of the building proudly represents the culture of the city and perfectly complements the architecture.

architecture of Paris. It houses the largest conference room in the UNESCO complex. The sessions of the General Conference are held in this huge hall. The interesting architectural feature of this building is its fluted concrete walls and copper covered fluted roof. Five other commission rooms of the building had been decorated by different countries like Germany, Italy, Denmark, France and Switzerland. 'Salle des Par Perdus' is the passage that links this building to the main building.
Four Storey Building of UNESCO
This building is located just behind the main building. It was built with the aim to house the Permanent Delegations and other Non-governmental organizations. The cube shaped building has four floors. The building is situated adjacent to the beautiful Garden of Peace popularly known as the Japanese Garden. This particular garden designed by Isamu Noguchi lends and ethereal beauty to the UNESCO Building of Paris. The marvelous garden is sculptured with water basins, stones and trees.
The six sunken patios of the UNESCO building were finally constructed in the year 1965 due to space shortage. The brilliant idea of building the six patios were chalked out by Bernard Zehrfuss. Each of the patio is designed in such a way that they receive ample daylight. These patios lead into a beautiful garden adorned with colorful flowers, various kinds of trees, ponds and fountains.
Apart from hosting important conferences and meetings, numerous exhibitions are held in the UNESCO Building premises.
