The Thoiry Castle and African Reserve is one of the major attractions in Paris, especially for children and young people. Thoiry, the massive Renaissance castle situated within the reserve is said to be the first African game reserve in the region. The African Reserve of Thoiry was created in1968 surrounding the gigantic 1559 built castle. Thoiry Castle and African Reserve in Paris has more than 1,000 free-roaming animals. Thoiry Castle and African Reserve has strongly participated in several social activities of preserving endangered species of plants and animals. The flora and fauna collection in this reserve is worth admiring. The zoo and the garden are the two major sections of the reserve.
It is the first reserve in France that works towards protecting endangered species. Several rare reptile species like European river otters, salamanders, frogs and fish are housed at the reserve. The reserve organizes several interactive sessions for children in order to explain the lifestyle and adaptability power of the animals in the zoo. The zoological gardens that cover an area of 300 acre are graced by conventional patterns of plants and unique forest growths. There are abundance of huge rhododendrons, prunus, magnolias and
other trees in the garden.

More than 10000 flowering trees and shrubs adorn the Botanical Gardens. The garden decorations are changed every year. 'The Talking Trees' and train tours within the zoological and botanical gardens are enjoyed by all visitors irrespective of age. Children have a splendid time at the Giant Spiderweb Playground and the well maintained park area.
The Chateau de Thoiry is best known for its unique architecture by the great architect, Philibert de L'Orme. The Renaissance architecture of the castle features a transparent bridge of light. Thoiry houses traditional furniture, upholstery, portraits and paintings that date back to more than 950 years. Reaching Thoiry Castle and African Reserve is the easiest by road.
The reserve lies 40 km west of Paris at Pont St Cloud. Buses numbered A13-A12, N12 take the visitors to Pontchartrain, and from there, the D11 bus leads directly to Thoiry. To reach the reserve visitors can also take SNCF Trains from Paris-Montparnasse station heading for Montfort l'Amaury, which is only 8 km from Thoiry. Thoiry Castle and African Reserve is open from 10 am to 6.30 pm round the year. Reservations are recommended for large groups.
