Paris Architecture


Paris architecture has always been fascinating and awe inspiring. As a capital city of France, Paris is a land of man made architecture marvels. The modern buildings in Paris have essentially evolved from the ancient ones. Paris architecture and design can be conveniently divided according to their period of construction.

Medieval Period Paris Architecture

Romans had invaded Paris in 52 BC. Architecture of Paris still retains some of the visible traces of Roman architecture. Rue Saint Jacques was the main Roman Road, which exists till today. Religious buildings were predominant in the city during the medieval period. These building were generally constructed with stone and exhibited a wide central corridor, surrounded by other narrow corridors branching off from the main, which is one of the typical of Roman style of architecture.

The advent of Gothic style of architecture ushered in new engineering methods. Pointed arches replaced the Roman arches. Flying buttresses were used as a result of which the walls became thinner. The Basilique Saint Denis was the first magnificent Gothic Cathedral built in Paris. The world famous cathedral of Notre Dame is an impressive Gothic building in the city built during 1163 and 1330. The facade of the carnival has been made attractive with ornate sculptures and buildings.

Renaissance Paris Architecture

The renaissance period of architectures in Paris was
built between the years 1515 and 1643 when Francis took over the French throne. He was an educated elite, who nurtured great passion for art. He hired some of the best artists and architects from Italy to renovate the Louvre. He also invited Leonardo di Vinci.

French Baroque and Classicism in Paris Architecture

The 17th century saw the emergence of French classic and Baroque style of architecture in Paris. Great Palace of Versailles originally reflects the baroque style. Huge floor plans decorated with massive sculptures were the main characteristics of this style.

Neo Classicism Paris Architecture

Neo classicism style of architecture of Paris exhibited versatility, in terms of experimenting with spaces. This style was simple with very less ornamentation and logical floor plans. The modern day Paris buildings still have Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian pillars, which stand as remnants of the Neo Classicism style of architecture in Paris. The Pantheon is a neo classical monument of Paris.

Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the distinctive landmarks of Paris architecture. Today to the world, the capital city of Paris is symbolized by this tall tower. It was named after its own architect Gustave Eiffel. Paris modern architecture is full of high rise buildings and is thrillingly diverse in nature. Grand Louvre's classy glass pyramid entrance, the Cita de la Musique by architect Christian de Portzamparc and the Opera Bastille represent contemporary and modern architecture in Paris.
