Alphonse Daudet


Alphonse Daudet was a popular French novelist, writer and dramatist. He was born in the Nimes city of France in the year 1840. 'Les Amoureuses' or 'Women in Love' was his first book on poetry. This poetry book came out in 1857, when Alphonse Daudet was just 18 years of age. Before this book, his first novel was published when he was only 14.

Life of Alphonse Daudet

Alphonse Daudet was brought up in Lyon. He served as a study master in a local school of Cevennes when he was just 16. At 17, Alphonse Daudet shifted to Paris and here he started to work as a newspaper writer. Later he started working as the Duke de Morny's private secretary. Later on in the Franco -Prussian war Alphonse joined the national army.

'Fromont the Younger and Riler the Elder' was his first famous literary work, which was published in 1874. For this work he was nominated for the French Academy
awards and it was his first national award.

Works of Alphonse Daudet

The novels of Alphonse Daudet vividly depicted the life of the French people in the province and in the city of Paris. His novels included both irony and humor, which was largely drawn from his personal experience.

Sapho, L'Evangeliste, Jack, Adventures prodigieuses de Tartarin de Tarascon, Numa Roumestan, Le Nabab, Contes du lundi, La Belle Nivernaise, Fromont jeune et Risler aine, L'Immortel and Les Rois en exil are some of his best known works.

Trente ans de Paris and Souvenirs d'un homme de lettres are two of his reminiscences that came out in 1888.
