Mulhouse History


Mulhouse is an industrial town located in France. Mulhouse history can be traced back to 803. In the early years, this city was under the Swiss rule. However, in 1798, the town came under the administration of France.

The name of the town, Mulhouse has derived from a mill wheel built by the people of the town. It came from Mulhausen, a German word that means a mill house. By 1308, Mulhouse developed to an independent town. It became associated with the cantons of Switzerland and from 1515 the town itself came to be recognized as one of their allied cantons. One of the mentionable facts of Mulhouse history is that from 1523 it supported the Reformation movement. The southern part of Alsace continued to be a Catholic sect but the northern part of Alsace supported the Lutheran cause.

History of Mulhouse states, that the town was included as a portion of France. After its inclusion in France, the economy of the town continued to flourish. The transport system of the town was also developed. Railway tracks were developed and Rhone-Rhine canal became an important transport route.

People kept coming to Mullhouse from Switzerland and Germany. Housing projects and cooperative societies were set up for improving the conditions of living of the workers. But the scenario changed as the Alsace region became a part of Germany. But the no sooner, it again associated itself with France.

During the period between 1940 and 1944, Nazi army occupied Mulhouse. Bombings during the wars caused much destruction to the city of Mulhouse. Later reconstruction work was undertaken in the city. Residential quarters in Mulhouse were restructured after the war, during the period of 1950 and 70.

The economy of the town developed during this time. People from outside Mulhouse came to seek work and thus settled here. Several industries grew up in the town of Mulhouse. One of the prosperous industries of this place was the textile industry. Automobile industry was also set up. There is a rich historical past of Mulhouse and it has emerged as a popular city in France. It has a well-developed communication system and its favorable geographical position has helped the town to prosper financially.
