Alfred Dreyfus was the youngest son of a Jewish textile manufacturer in Mulhouse. He was born on 9th October 1859 in Mulhouse, eastern France. He was a French army officer. His trial for an act of deliberate betrayal began a 12-year contention, known as the Dreyfus Affair. Dreyfus affair is regarded as the most sensational political affair in the political history of France.
Academic Career of Alfred Dreyfus
In 1871, Dreyfus was influenced by the Prussian troops and decided to join in military. In 1882, Dreyfus took admission to the Ecole Polytechnic military school in Paris. In Ecole Polytechnic, he went through military training. From 1880 to 1882, Dreyfus was involved in the artillery school at Fontainebleau. In 1885, he was involved in the 32nd Cavalry Regiment, where he became the lieutenant. Then he became the military assistant to the director of the Etablissement de Bourges in 1889 and finally became a captain.

In 1891, Dreyfus took admission to the War College and in 1993 he completed his graduation. After graduation, he joined the French Army's General Staff headquarters as a trainee. He was the only Jewish army officer there.

In 1894, Dreyfus was impeached of revealing military secrets to Germany. He was court-marshaled and eventually sent to the penal colony in French Guiana. It was the most controversial political drama in the political history of France, which is known as Dreyfus affair.
In 1896, he was proved innocent. A new court-martial in 1899 again found him guilty but it was President of the Republic, who pardoned Dreyfus and overruled all previous convictions. In 1904, after leftist government came to the power, Dreyfus called for a fresh inquiry. Dreyfus issue was discussed in the press with passion until he was freed from any question of guilt in 1906. Dreyfus was restored to the previous rank as a major and was finally promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
