Montpellier is a vibrant city located in Southern France. The city is the capital of the Herault department as well as the Languedoc-Rousillon region. Earlier, the name of the city was Monspessulanus. Earlier Montpellier was known as Monspessulanus. It stood for mont pele, which means a naked hill and was called so because the area has very scarce population. It is one of the few cities in France that do not have a (Gallo-) Roman background. The city's university known as the University of Montpellier is one of the oldest universities of the country.

The exact location of the city is 10 km (6 miles) inland from the Mediterranean coast on 43º36'43?N latitude and 3º52'38?E longitude on the River Lez. The city is located at an altitude of 7m to 57m.
