Marseille is the largest port city of France and is situated on the Mediterranean Sea. Marseille Location and Geography has played a major role in shaping the urban area's history. Marseille was founded by the Greeks in 600B.C. In modern times, the city is the hub of southern Europe and contributes a major share in the country's economy. Callelongue, a fishing village, lies on the outskirts of Marseille and further east lies Calanques, which is a rugged coastal area interlarded with tiny fjords.
Sainte- Baume is a mountain ridge which starts from the deciduous forests and extends to the town of Toulon and the French Riviera.

Mont Sainte Victoire lies to the north of Marseille while I' Estaque, a colony inhabited by the artists in former times, stands to the west of Marseille. Further west in the Rhone delta lies the Camargue, Cote Bleue and the Camargue region. The airport is situated in the northwestern part of Marseille city.

Marseille encompasses a large area, which is further distributed to 16 arrondissements. The old historical buildings are encompassed by the six central arrondissements. Marseille has 'walk only' areas among which St Ferreol, Corus Honore-d'Estienne-d'Orves and Cours Julien are the notable ones. The city also offers all the modern transport facilities. The Gare St Charles railway station is situated in the first arrondissement.
