The timeline of Marseille dates back to 600 B.C. The city was first discovered by the Phoenicians who put the city on the world map. In ancient times it was the commercial hub of the Phoenicians. This period marks the reign of King Louis XIV in the 17th century. Gradually, the city catered to all sides of the European wars going on at that time. The city was plundered by an Aragon naval force at the commencement of the 15th century. However, it was restored with the help of the Forbin family. Finally in 1481, the pot city of Marseille was incorporated within the French territory.

Battle of Marseille

Battle of Marseille unfolded the Nazi attack on the French Jews. Old Port was the place where the battle took place. The operation against the Jews was supported by the Vichy regime and a horrifyingly large number of the French Jewish population were deported. The operation commenced from Old Port as the Germans believed that the place was inhabited by persons inimical to Nazi rule. Around 12,000 policemen were brought in order to kick start the operation.
