TRADITIONS OF LYON

Important Festivals: Lyon is a city that has an intense cultural life. Around thirty museums house permanent collections. The most celebrated festival of Lyon is Fete des lumieres (festival of lights). It is celebrated on 8th December. The people pay homage to Virgin Mary by placing little candle lamps in their windows. This festival is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm. The festival is now a major event for spectacular lighting displays. As a part of a program launched four years ago, the main sites and monuments are spotlighted.

Customs and Traditions: Huge numbers of tourists visit Lyon every year. Lyon is a culturally rich city. The National Opera, the National Orchestra, the Lumiere Institute, La Maison de la Danse and the Celestins Theatre.

The city is a musical city enjoying various kinds of music such as ancient, classic, contemporary, international and traditional French songs. Dance, theatre and cabaret are a part of the city's life. The city is home to two important centers of musical learning such as the Conservatoire National Superieur and the Conservatoire national de region. Famous French artists such as Serge Lama or Enrico Macais perform here. Also many classical concerts are organized. Contemporary and Classical styles are represented in Lyon.

Both classical and contemporary theatres are there in Lyon. Theatre lovers can visit The Celestins Theatre, the oldest theatre in Lyon. Contemporary theatre lovers can visit Le Theatre des Jeunes Annees.
