Lyon Municipal Arrondissements


Lyon is the third largest city of France. Three communes of France have 45 municipal arrondissements in total. Lyon is one of those communes, which have 9 Municipal Arrondissements. The Lyon Municipal Arrondissements have idiosyncratic pattern due to historical reasons.

In the year 1852, Lyon was made of 5 Arrondissements. They were as follows:
  • In 1852 the first arrondissements of Lyon comprised Terreaux, Martiniere/St-Vincent and Pentes de la Croix-Rousse.
  • The 2nd Lyon arrondissements were consisted of Perrache, Confluent, Bellecour, Ainay, and Cordeliers.
  • The former commune of La Guillotiere was part of the 3rd Lyon-arrondissements in 1852.
  • At that time, the 4th arrondissements of Lyon was made of the former commune of La Croix-Rousse.
  • The 5th arrondissements included the area of Fourviere and the former commune of Vaise.

Development of 6th to 9th Municipal Arrondissements in Lyon

In 1894, the 6th arrondissement of Lyon was made. The entire area of Parc de la Tete d’Or was made the part of Lyon’s 6th arrondissement, which was until then divided between Lyon and Villeurbanne.

With the turn of the century, decision was taken to split the southern parts of the 3rd arrondissement of Lyon. It was because the area was largely grown in terms of population. This led to the development of the 7th arrondissement in Lyon.

The 8th arrondissement in Lyon was created in 1959 and the 9th arrondissement was formed in the year 1964.

Geographically the Lyon Municipal Arrondissements are divided by Rhone and Saone rivers into three major groups.ious issue are taken which includes certificates of urbanism, demolition permits, subdivision permits and Building permits.
