Lyon Light Festival


Lyon Light Festival is one of the biggest events of the city of Lyon. It is an annual festival that is celebrated on 8th of December. On the day of this festival, people of Lyon decorate their windows with lights and candles. Streets of Lyon, where people gather to dance and sway with the enchanting music, are also decorated with lights.

The Light Festival of Lyon had its inception in the year of 1852. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the statue of Virgin Mary on Fourviere Hill. From then onwards, the Festival of lights in Lyon is celebrated with pomp and grandeur throughout the city. It is also known as ‘Fete des Lumieres’ by the French people.

Lights of various shapes and sizes are used to decorate the city of Lyon. City Hall, Fine Arts Museum and the Cathedral of St Jean look glorious after being illuminated with bright lights. People from various corners join hands to be a part of the extravaganza. At places, theatrical performances take place. Lyon Light Festival is celebrated with great honor by the people of the city.

Light professionals play a great role in the whole decoration. Various buildings and public places are adorned with garland of lights. The LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International) association, since 2001, has been given the task of illuminating the city during the Festival of Light in Lyon.
