Lyon Geography


Rhone and Saone rivers dominate Lyon Geography. These two rivers meet on the southern part of the city and form a type of peninsula or “presquile”. The mountain Croix-Rousse stands to the northern side of Lyon. In the western side, the hill Fourviere stands tall. The area covered by Lyon is approximately 4787 hectares (11,830 acres). The geographical coordinates of Lyon falls between 45° 45’ North latitude and 4° 50' 60” East longitude.
The original medieval city, known as Vieux Lyon, was built on Saone River’s west bank and at the foothills of the Fourviere. Place Bellecour, which happens to be the third biggest public square of France, is situated on the peninsula formed between Rhone and Saone rivers. Lyon has temperate type of climate. The annual average temperature of the city remains at about 11.3º Celsius. July and August are the hottest months of the city. The major area of modern Lyon is to the eastern side of the Rhone River.
