Ballets are an integral part of the culture of Lyon. Maison de la Danse is a famous dance hall of Lyon. The Old Time Square Dancing and the Western Square Dancing of Lyon is also very popular. The Old Time Square Dancing calls for simple body movements whereas the Western Square Dancing has more complicated body movements.

A number of cultural events take place in Lyon. During the summer months, from June to September, Les Nuits de Fourviere takes place in the city. At the Gallo-Roman amphitheatre of Fourviere, a number of musical and theatrical performances are organized. Another major event is the National Biennial Festivals of Dance and Contemporary Art that witnesses stalwarts of dance, music and art from various corners of the world. On 8th December, the annual Festival of Lights is celebrated. To commemorate the statue of Virgin Mary on Fourviere Hill, people light their balconies with lanterns.
