Le Havre





Le Havre is a city in Normandy, northern France that is located on the English Channel at the mouth of the Seine. Le Havre is known as "La Porte Oceane". It is France's second port and was founded in 1517 by Renaissance king Francois Ist. Around 2,000 feet of a mile-long beach belongs to the Le Havre Commune. The yatching harbor can be freely accessed 24 hours a day. There are around 300 mooring spaces on it.

Le Havre is the largest city in Normandy before Rouen. In July, 2005, the city was classified as a World Heritage Site. There's one university in the city. The city also has a strong sporting heritage. "Le HAC", the oldest professional association football club is located in Le Havre. The city has a rich history linked to its harbour.

Area & Location: Montivilliers, Harfleur and Gonfreville-l'Orcher are the cities that border Le Havre. To the east of Le Havre lies the Pont de Normandie. Le Havre covers a total area of 46.95 square kilometer. The total population of Le Havre is 190,905 with a total density of 4,066 per square kilometer.

Transportation: city has a well-developed national road, rail and air links. From Paris, tourists can reach Le Havre in two hours by train. An extensive bus network connects the city. A ferry service to Portsmouth in the United Kingdom runs from the Terminal de la Citadelle.

Places of Attraction: Two popular places of attraction in Le Havre are Musee des Beaux Arts Andre Malraux and Eglise St-Joseph. The city faced heavy bombing during the Second World War. As a result, many historic buildings were lost. The main churches of Le Havre are Church of St. Joseph, Church of St. Michel, Church of St. Vincent, Church of St. Francois, Church of St. Marie and St. Michel d'Ingouville Chapel.
