Tove Jansson


Tove Jansson, one of the eminent people of Helsinki was a great writer as well as a painter and illustrator. The parents of Tove Jansson were Viktor Jansson, a sculptor and Signe Hammarsten-Jansson, a graphic artist. They formed a part of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland. Jansson imbibed the principles of art and creativity from her parents. She was born on 9th August in 1914.

The fame of Tove Jansson began when she was in England and her Moomins comic strip got published by the London Evening News. The Moomin novels by Tove Jansson are funny and are popular children's stories. However they are also loved by adults. Moominland evokes the pictures of true Nordic landscapes like the
coastal archipelagos and dense forests. Her books on the Moomins were translated into as many as 35 languages. One of the famous works of Tove Jansson is 'Moominland Midwinter', which was published in 1957. The main character of this novel was Moomintroll.

Many of the characters of Tove Jansson have been dark and sinister like the Hemulens or the Hattifatners. The characters created by her, became so popular that two Moominland theme parks have been built in Finland and Japan.

Tove Jansson, one of the greatest writers of Finland passed away on 27th June in 2001.
