Tarja Halonen, who is the 11th President of the Republic of Finland, is the first female head of state. She was born on the Christmas Eve in the year of 1943 in Helsinki.
Tarja Halonen of Helsinki completed her graduation from the University of Helsinki in 1968 and is a Master of Laws. Her professional career started as a Social Affairs Secretary in 1969-70 in the national Union of Finnish Students. In 1970 Tarja Halonen started as a lawyer in the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions.
Political Life of Tarja Halonen began in 1974 when she was appointed parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister. In the year of 1979, she was elected to the Parliament for the first time and then four times consequently until she joined the office of the President of Finland. Tarja Halonen was the Minister at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health from 1987 to1990, Minister of Justice from 1990 to1991 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 2000. She was a Member of the Committee of Wise Persons of the Council of Europe in 1989-99 and has played an important role at the Council of Europe. Tarja Halonen, during her rule as the President, has served as a co-chair of World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation.
Married to doctor Pentti Arajärvi, Tarja Halonen has one daughter. Apart from her carrier, theater has been one of her interests along with history of arts, painting and drawing. Due to her great hand in the politics of the country, she has been one of the Famous Helsinki People.
