Ragnar Granit


Ragnar Granit, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1967, was one of the famous people of Helsinki. The contributions of Ragnar Granit in the field of medicine will always be remembered.

The birthplace of Ragnar Granit was Helsinge in Finland and he was born on 30th October in 1900. His parents were Arthur Wilhelm Granit and Albertina Helena Malmberg. As far as the education of Ragnar Granit is concerned he matriculated in 1919 from Helsingfors University. He participated in the War of Liberation of Finland in1918, when he was still a school student.

Some of the awards won by Ragnar Granit are Purkinje Gold Medal, Prague in 1969, Sherrington Memorial
Gold Medal, London in 1967, F. C. Donders Medal, Utrecht in 1957, Anders Retzius Gold Medal, Stockholm in 1957, Jubilee Medal of the Swedish Society of Physicians in 1947and Hans Cronstedt's Prize in 1926.

Before Ragnar Granit moved to Sweden he did the scientific work that earned him the Nobel Prize in Finland. However he could not receive the prize earlier as he was a member of the Nobel Committee. It was only after his retirement in 1967, that the Nobel Committee decided to award him.

Ragnar Granit spent the last years of his life in Vikminne in Korppoo and he died on 12 th March in 1991.
