The political parties in Helsinki play an important role in the functioning of the government. Overseeing the safety and the security of the people of the city, the local parties also have the onus of maintaining discipline in the country and taking care of issues concerned with city planning, health care, schools and public transport.

Three of the most important political parties in Helsinki are the National Coalition party, the Green League party and the Social Democrat party. Three of them together constitute 75% of the total seats in the Helsinki government. Among all the political parties in Helsinki, the National Coalition party or the Kokoomus party is the biggest and the second in the line is the Social Democrat party, although the tables turned during the 2000 elections when the Green League party emerged victorious from its strongest
constituency that is the city of Helsinki. The crowning seat was reclaimed by the Social Democrat party during the 2004 elections.

Some of the other political parties in Helsinki are the Left Alliance, the Centre Party, True Finns, the Christian Democrats, the Swedish People's Party and the SKP. The Left Alliance and the Swedish People's Party together hold seven to eight percent of the total government seats in Helsinki.
