The Helsinki Police department is regarded as the biggest police unit in the whole of Finland and has a staff of 1,900, of whom about 1,600 are police officers. It is gathered from the history of Helsinki Police, that the department was established in the year 1826.

The head of Helsinki Police department is the Commissioner of Police. The units of the Helsinki Police Department are 4 in number. They are the Police Precincts, Immigration Police,Traffic Police and Special Operations and Criminal Investigation Division.

The city is categorized into 4 police precincts, namely Downtown, Itäkeskus, Malmi and Pasila. The functions of police precincts are to maintain order, supply license services and investigate crime. They also investigate common crimes like drug-related crimes, those
against property and violent ones against people.

The Immigration Unit of Helsinki Police deals with nationality issues, visa extensions, re-entry visas, - residence and work permits, passports and travel documents and identity card issues.

The Traffic Police Unit manages traffic control throughout Helsinki, while the Special Operations Unit serves all the various police departments in the country.

The Criminal Investigation Division of Helsinki Police investigates all those crimes, which have a strong impact on society.
