Mika Waltari


Mika Waltari is one of the well known writers of Finland, who excelled in the field of literature. He was a very prolific writer, whose historical novels were immensely popular. Among the famous works of Mika Waltari, mention must be made of 'The Egyptian', which was originally known as Sinuhe, Egyptiläinen and was published in1945. Many works of Mika Waltari had been into as many as 30 languages.

As far as the education of Mika Waltari is concerned, he studied theology at the University of Helsinki, and later switched to aesthetics, philosophy and literature and received his M.A. In 1929.

He traveled to Paris in 1927 and wrote at his first novel, Suuri illusioni or The Great Illusion in 1928. He later brought out a collection of poems, named Valtatiet,
which he composed in collaboration with Olavi Paavolainen. The poems of Waltari revolve around topics like a silver stork, car accident and various other symbols. He had also worked as a literature critic and journalist in the 1930s and 1940s. He wrote for various magazines and newspapers like Maaseudun Tulevaisuus and Suomen Kuvalehti

Film makers were great fans of Mika Waltari and has made 33 films, which were based on his popular works. Some of the films are Kaarina Maununtytär, Felix Onnellinen, Tanssi yli hautojen, Kuka murhasi rouva Skrofin, Tähdet kertovat, komisario Palmu and Komisario Palmun erehdys.

Mika Waltari is regarded to be one of the most important writers Finnish writers of the 20th century.
