Linus Torvalds, Helsinki


Linus Torvalds one of the Famous Helsinki People is a computer scientist. He was born on the 28th of December in the year of 1969 in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. He is best known as the person, who wrote the kernel for the Linux Operating System. Linus Torvalds of Helsinki was a college student at the University of Helsinki. He started with the basics of a Unix system and wrote the original code of kernel for a new system for his x86 PC that was later dubbed Linux. Today Linux is considered as the leader of allowing users to re-program their own operating systems. Linus wanted to name his creation Linux as 'Freax', but
changed it at the prompting of a friend.

Linus Torvalds was born to Nils and Anna Torvalds, who were both journalists. However, he was highly influenced by his maternal grandfather to pursue his career in computers. Since childhood, Linus was brilliant in mathematics. Life of Linus Torvalds in computers began at the University of Helsinki in 1988 where he studied computer science. Linus is from a minority group in Finland and thus his first language is not Finnish but Swedish. For this reason, his pronunciation of Linux in Swedish were not understood or often taken as an error.
