The Hietaniemi beach is one of the stunning sandy beaches of Helsinki. The popularity of Hietaniemi beach lies in the fact that it is situated in the heart of Helsinki and in colloquial terms is known as Hietsu. Besides Hietaniemi beach, the other popular beaches of Helsinki are located on the islands of Suomenlinna and Pihlajasaariin and in Meri-Rastila, in the eastern part of the city.
As far as the location of Hietaniemi beach is concerned it is situated in the Töölö district of Helsinki, very close to the Hietaniemi Cemetery.

in the early 20th century, Hietaniemi was used as a landfill and was later transformed into a sand storage. For many years, sand from the bottom of the sea was carried to the place by barges. The sand was never utilized and it gradually spread over a large area. It was only in 1929 that the local people changed the place to a sandy beach.
Due to the proximity of Hietaniemi beach to the city center, it acts as a very popular summer destination for both tourists and locals. Tourists love to play volleyball on the Hietaniemi beach and swim in the waters.
In 2008, the annual Helsinki Roller Marathon, is slated to begin from the Hietaniemi beach.
