Helsinki Government


The principal bodies of the Helsinki Government are the Administration Centre and City Council, which completely look after the governance of the city and its municipalities. It is through a knowledge of Helsinki Government, that people can learn about the governing principles of the city.

Helsinki City Council comprises 85 members, who are elected by municipal elections, which take place after 4 years. It is the most important decision-making organ of the city. In addition to this it decides important financial issues of the city like the income tax percentage, budget and more.

The Administration Centre of Helsinki is a chief preparation, planning and executive body of the city. It has a number of administrative functions like
managing the office duties of the Mayor and Deputy Mayors, the City Board, City Council and even the legal issues of the city.

It is the duty of the city council to appoint Mayor of Helsinki. The current mayor of the city is Jussi Pajunen, who was appointed to serve a term of 7 years from 2005. He had been a member of the Helsinki city council for some 8 years and was also the chairman of the city board. The Deputy Mayors of Helsinki are Pekka Korpinen, Pekka Sauri, Ilkka-Christian Björklund and Paula Kokkonen.

Some of the well known political parties of Helsinki are National Coalition Party, Green League, SDP, SKP, Left Alliance, Swedish People's Party, Christian Democrats and True Finns.
