Games of the XV Olympiad


The events of Games of the XV Olympiad were very significant and the sports persons of Finland got a chance to display their talents and skills in various games. It was also known as the Summer Olympics of 1952.

The games commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the torch and it was lit by Paavo Nurmi et Hannes Kolehmainen. After that the torch was carried up to the top of the stadium tower by young football players. The Olympic Oath was taken by Heikki Savolainen. The Games were officially opened by President Juho Paasikivi. Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia, was one of
the biggest performers of Games of the XV Olympiad.

At the time of the Games of the XV Olympiad, the entire Helsinki Olympic Stadium were packed with thousands of foreign spectators. It was a time to celebrate as there was total normalcy in the country after the World War II. It is gathered from the pages of history that the Games of the XV Olympiad, were to be held in the year 1940, but due to the war, the plan had to be changed. Thus Helsinki hosted the games in 1952, after it was hosted by London in 1948.

The Finns remember the Games of the XV Olympiad as one of the best events in the field of sports.
