Artturi Ilmari Virtanen was a Finnish Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in the year 1945 and is considered to be one of the famous Helsinki people. Born in the year 1895, he completed his primary education at the Classical Lyceum in Viipuri. His scientific bent of mind started gaining prominence during his pursuance of masters degree in Chemistry in the year 1913.
Simultaneously, he completed his Phd in organic chemistry too. It was not long before he realized that he should not constrict his horizon of knowledge to chemistry but also venture out into fields like Botany and Zoology. Even after working for a considerable period of time in the dairy product laboratories of Valio and later becoming the director of the farm, he shifted to enhancing his educational qualification by gaining educational apprenticeship in fields like physical chemistry, soil chemistry and microbiology.
