Helsinki Architecture

The Helsinki architecture encapsulates the present and the past, evoking an ambiance that provides an immaculate picture of the culture of Helsinki. Some of the renowned Finnish architects who created magic with their designs were Carl Engels and Alvar Aalto.

The Helsinki Senate Square is one of the most important architectural masterpieces designed by the former, spotting some of the most important buildings and cultural sites. Buildings like the Helsinki Cathedral, Finlandia Hall and the Helsinki Olympic Stadium are the true repositories of a designer's creativity and an engineer's ingenuity.
Architecture in Helsinki is predominated by Art Nouveau buildings, which show considerable influence from the Kalevala, a popular theme in the romantic art form of the era. This style of architecture can generally be spotted in residential areas like that of Katajanokka and Ullanlinna. Influenced by the theories of functionalism, Alvar Aalto created designs that encapsulated the memories of the past with a modern bent of mind. One such monument in Helsinki is the Finlandia Hall.

Some of the other buildings of architectural importance include the Olympic stadium, the Tennis palace, the swimming stadium, the glass palace and many more. Helsinki architecture is the repository of the long drawn amalgamation of various influences on the art forms of the country.
