Adolf Erik Nordenskiold


Adolf Erik Nordenskiold was a native of Finland and one of the famous Helsinki people in the field of geology. He was born in Helsinki in Finland in the year 1832. One of the most famous scientific explorers in the country, Adolf Erik Nordenskiold went on numerous expeditions to the Arctic and some other places of geological importance. He was also an associate member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, a member of the Stockholm Academy of Sciences and an Honorary Member of the Russian Geographical Society.

He was also known for his courageous exploration endeavors along the northern coast of Europe and Asia. The expeditions of Adolf Erik Nordenskiold, although characterized by journeys that needed extreme physical strength, fructified into major revelations in the field of geo-science.
Some of Adolf Erik Nordenskiold explorations include:
  • Expeditions to the Kara Sea and the origination of the Yenisei between 1875 and 1876
  • An expedition through the North-Eastern straits, starting from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean between the year1878 and 1879. He was the first to complete a journey of this kind through the treacherous terrains from Tromsoto the Bering Strait. This particular expedition is referred to as the 'navigation of the North-East passage'.
  • He was also successful in mapping the south of Spitsbergen island.
