Helsinki is the capital of Finland. It is also the country's largest city. The city was founded in 1550 by King Gustav I of Sweden. Considered as Finland's international gateway, Helsinki is the country's nerve center for business, finance, fashion, medicine, entertainment, media, culture and intellectual discourse. Helsinki was attacked by Soviet bombers in the aerial bombings of the Winter War in 1939-40 and the Continuation War in 1941-44. With the rise in population after the urbanization in 1970, Helsinki metropolitan area became one of the fastest growing urban centers in the European Union.

The city's major attractions are related to the sea. Suomenlinna sea-fortress and Seurasaari Island with its parks and open-air museum lure the visitors positively. Hietaniemi Beach, main beach in the district of Töölö is another tourist destination.
